Energy Efficient Homes

With the cost of energy constantly climbing, few things are more important than the energy efficiency of your home. Every ounce of fuel you consume bumps your energy bills up. Luckily, there are certain things you can do to reduce the cost of your energy bills significantly, whether you’re installing new comfort system components or simply want to reduce the workload of your current system.

Call A#1 Air today to discuss easy ways to reduce the amount of energy you use. We’ve helped many Dallas, TX area homeowners reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills and we would be happy to help you as well.

Energy Efficient HVAC Components

Some components are more energy efficient than others. Start with your heating system: if you’re looking for a new furnace, try to find one with an AFUE rating of at least 90%. The ratings start at 80%, but the higher they go, the more energy efficient the device is. If you want to save money, gas powered furnaces are the least expensive to operate due to the low cost of natural gas.

Solar powered fans can help reduce the workload of your air conditioning unit. Solar fans use the sun’s rays to funnel air into your attic. On really hot days, this can reduce the workload on your air conditioner by as much as 40% and save you a lot of money.

Home Insulation

The next best way to save money and reduce your energy use is to ensure all of the heating and cooling produced for your home stays inside. Insulation is the best place to start. While the insulation in your walls and ceilings is very important, you should take the extra step to double check the weather stripping and insulation around your doors and windows, and make sure the attic is thoroughly insulated as well.

However, while insulation in your attic is a great way to stop the loss of heat in the winter, it can also put an extra load on your air conditioner in the summer. Radiant barriers and attic fans can counteract this heat buildup and keep your air conditioning costs down.

Temperature Control

Most families just want to be comfortable and so they’re willing to pay to heat or cool all rooms in their home. However, most of the time, there are rooms that aren’t in use. Why pay money to control the temperature upstairs when you’re watching TV downstairs or you aren’t even home?

A zone control system is a great investment and allows you to heat or cool the rooms in your home selectively. This system allows you to set individual temperatures in each room of your home, even turning off the comfort system for rooms that don’t need the extra heating or cooling. Most zone control systems come with a programmable thermostat as well, allowing you to set times when your heating and air conditioning should turn on and off, even when you’re not home. You don’t sacrifice any comfort and you also keep your bills low.

Regular HVAC Maintenance

Beyond all of the tasks you can perform to reduce your energy use, make sure your home comfort system stays in good shape. Regular maintenance and careful attention to possible repairs can significantly reduce the cost of energy throughout the year.
